FILM 7: CIVILIZATION / COLLINGS

 1. Who is Matthew Collings? Why should we believe his stories?

Collings chose to discuss a wide range of art history. Why? What was his point?

British art critic, author, artist, and television host Matthew Collings is well-known for his criticism and analysis of contemporary art. His broad and lighthearted approach to art critique, especially in his books and television shows about modern and contemporary art, helped him become well-known in the 1990s.

In light of his extensive expertise and background, his stories may be believed. Collings, both an artist and a critic, has extensive knowledge of the art world. He has spent much time researching, writing about, and creating art. His "expertise" encompasses both contemporary trends and art history, giving him a thorough comprehension of the subjects he discusses. His opinions are more credible because of the years of experience that have formed them.

Collings decided to look at a range of art history to demonstrate how many different kinds of art can evoke strong feelings in people. He chose to cover such a broad span of art history because of the great diversity of art history and how many distinct movements and moments are related to one another.

2. What storytelling approaches did Collings use to tell his stories? Compare his film to those of Marlow, Bruce, Schama, Greenaway, Hockney, and Me. Who is the worst storyteller so far? Why?

Colling told his experiences in a variety of ways while making them more approachable. Speaking in a contentious tone and speaking casually to seem as more approachable are two of his primary strategies. He was also skilled at employing comedy to provide entertainment value to more sophisticated and intricate works of art. He comments about art while showcasing it visually on television to further explain and aid viewers. Since I believe that the finest approach to telling a narrative is to appeal to human emotions, I believe that Greenaway is the weakest storyteller on the list. The others, in my opinion, just do it better.

3.
What image from your generation do you think will survive to speak to future generations? PASTE THIS IMAGE IN YOUR BLOG.  What will that image say about our current civilization (will it be positive or negative?) Explain.

This image will likely speak to future generations about the dual nature of our civilization. On the positive side, it shows how connected people are through technology, allowing for communication, information exchange, and opportunities that didn't exist before. On the negative side, it also highlights how technology can lead to detachment from the real world, with individuals becoming absorbed in their screens, sometimes at the expense of personal relationships or mental health.
