FILM 1: Van Gogh - Schama

 1. Which is your favorite Van Gogh self-portrait painting? Why? How was it made? How does it control your eye? When you look, what do you see first? second? Does it bother you that Van Gogh refused to be photographed? Which is your favorite sunflower painting? Why? How was it made? How does it control your eye? When you look, what do you see first? second? What does it mean to you?

  • My favorite Van Gogh self-portrait is "Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear." I love it because the colors are so intense, and it really captures his emotional state at the time. The bandage adds a layer of intrigue and makes me wonder about the story behind it. Van Gogh used oil paints on canvas, and you can see his signature brushstrokes that create texture and depth. He often painted from life, which gives his work a sense of immediacy. The way he positioned himself and the contrasting colors draw the viewer's eye straight to his face first, then to the bandage, which is really striking. When I first look at it, I notice his eyes—they're so expressive! Then my gaze moves to the bandaged ear, which makes me curious. This painting means a lot to me because it shows vulnerability and the struggles he faced, which I find relatable. It reminds me that art can be a powerful way to express emotions.

  • 2. Which scene in this film affected you the most either conceptually, emotionally or physically? Why? How did Schama accomplish this? Did it make the film better?

    • The scene that affected me conceptually is the one where it was dicussed how he vaulved complimentary colors and use them inhis paintings to captura sense . I believe this scene was important because it expressed how he likes to bring things to life and make them dramatic and more relastic to real life . Schama acomplished this by helping adress the critical thinking that van gough created while mapping out the portraits . This made the film better because he it gace a deeper meeting to what artist go through when making artwork .

    3. Van Gogh made over 1000 paintings in 10 years. This is more than any other painter we have discussed. Do you think his paintings are better or worse because of this approach? Skill aside, if you finished a new painting every day how would it change you / the world?

    • Van Gogh’s prolific output, creating over 1,000 paintings in just a decade, highlights his intense drive and focus, even amid personal struggles. While his speed may not have allowed for the same level of refinement as other masters, it didn’t make his work worse. In fact, it likely fueled his unique style and emotional intensity, allowing him to experiment and express himself more freely. If I were to finish a new painting every day, I believe it would have a significant impact on me. While it might lead to faster technical skill and a deeper understanding of my creative process, it could also result in burnout or a loss of passion. As for the world, a daily cycle of creation might flood the scene with ideas, but it could also dilute the value of each piece if rushed or lacking in reflection.
