Minimalism - Pop

 1. POP -  In the film, you are essentially given a tour of Lichtenstein's artistic thought process from his own mouth. Discuss his approach to making art in terms of where and how he is inspired and what he chooses for his subject matter.

Roy Lichtenstein's artistic approach was deeply shaped by his interest in popular culture, mass media, and the visual language of advertising and comic books. He was particularly drawn to the bold, graphic style and dramatic storytelling found in comic books. Lichtenstein frequently took iconic frames from comic strips, modifying and reinterpreting them to create unique works of art.

2. What do you feel drove Lichtenstein as an art maker? How did he reference pop culture?

Roy Lichtenstein was all about shaking up the idea of what counts as "real" art. He took inspiration from comics, advertisements, and pop culture, flipping them into something new and exciting. With his use of bold colors, dot patterns, and thick lines, he reimagined the ordinary, giving it an artistic twist. His work was a nod to street style while also critiquing how the media packages stories and emotions as consumer products.

3. Some of Lichtenstein's critics have said he was a plagiarist, not an artist. What are your thoughts on the matter?

I disagree; Lichtenstein didn’t just replicate comic book panels—he reimagined them. By enlarging, isolating, and changing the context of the images, he elevated commercial art into monumental fine art, encouraging viewers to see it from a fresh perspective. The main critique he faces is that he often failed to credit the original comic artists, like Irv Novick and Tony Abruzzo, whose work he adapted. Critics argue that this oversight undermined the contributions of commercial illustrators, whose artistry was frequently overlooked.
